How to read this comparison
This is a comparison of Nioxin and DS Laboratories. FOLIGAIN publishes this resource but is not part of this comparison; both names are trademarks of their owners.
OTC Minoxidil products at the same strength contain the same active ingredient under the same FDA rules. Real differences are usually format, inactive ingredients (such as propylene glycol or alcohol level), pack size, price per month, buying channel and whether a subscription or telehealth visit is involved.
Prices and ranges change often. Where a row says 'Not offered / not verified', we have not confirmed the product on a current label.
About Nioxin
Nioxin is a Wella salon brand best known for cosmetic cleanse-condition-treat systems for thinning-looking hair. It also sells Nioxin Hair Regrowth Treatment Extra Strength for Men, an OTC Minoxidil 5% topical solution labeled by The Wella Corporation (NDC 69282-002), including in a regrowth kit with shampoo and conditioner.
Only the Hair Regrowth Treatment contains Minoxidil. Nioxin states that its Hair Fall Defense range does not contain Minoxidil, and the numbered Systems are cosmetics.
- Salon distribution
- Systems matched to hair type and thinning level
- Sells a Minoxidil 5% men's treatment alongside cosmetics
About DS Laboratories
DS Laboratories sells both an FDA-registered OTC Minoxidil drug and cosmetic hair products. Spectral UHP Extra Strength is a Minoxidil 5% hair regrowth treatment under the OTC monograph, while its better-known Spectral.DNC-N and Revita lines use Nanoxidil®, a proprietary cosmetic ingredient that is not Minoxidil.
Because the lineup mixes a drug with cosmetics, the two types should not be confused: only Spectral UHP contains Minoxidil; the Nanoxidil® products are cosmetics and do not carry the OTC Minoxidil drug facts label.
- Sells a Minoxidil 5% treatment (Spectral UHP) alongside Nanoxidil® cosmetics
- Proprietary cosmetic actives such as Nanoxidil®
How to choose
Pick the label that matches your sex and needs, then the format you'll use consistently. Compare cost per month rather than per bottle, and ask a pharmacist if you have health conditions.
