What are male pattern baldness stages?

Male pattern baldness stages describe where hair has thinned or disappeared, usually around the temples, front hairline and crown. The most common guide is the Hamilton–Norwood scale, often shortened to the Norwood scale. It runs from stage 1, with little or no recession, to stage 7, with extensive loss across the top.

Male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia, involves inherited sensitivity to hormones, particularly dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Over time, affected follicles can produce finer, shorter hairs. This gradual shrinking is called miniaturization.

The scale is a visual reference—not a diagnosis, a countdown or a score of your health. You do not need to reach a particular stage before asking for help.

The seven Norwood stages explained

Compare both the front and the crown, which is the area near the back of the top of your head. Looking only at your hairline can miss changes elsewhere.

Some charts also show “A” variants, where the front hairline moves backward more evenly, without the usual separate crown spot. These are alternative patterns, not extra steps everyone goes through.

Do all men progress through every stage?

No. Hair loss can progress slowly, change more noticeably during certain periods or remain similar for years. Some men keep a mildly receded hairline; others develop more extensive thinning. A stage cannot reliably tell you how much hair you will lose or when.

Family history can offer clues, but it is not a forecast. Relevant genes can come from either side of the family—not just your mother’s side.

The scale also has limits. Diffuse thinning across the top may not fit neatly into one stage. Hair length, curl, color and lighting can change how much scalp shows without changing the underlying pattern.

How to assess your stage without overchecking

Use the scale as a starting point, then look for sustained changes. Checking daily can make normal differences in lighting or styling feel alarming. Photos taken every few months are generally more useful.

A dermatologist can examine your scalp and hair thickness to distinguish male pattern loss from shedding, breakage or another condition. Sudden, patchy, painful or inflamed hair loss should be assessed rather than assigned a Norwood stage.

Which treatments can help at different stages?

Treatment usually has more opportunity to preserve hair while follicles are still producing it. At earlier stages, the goal may be slowing loss and improving density. With more extensive loss, maintaining remaining hair may be more realistic than restoring a former hairline. Individual results vary.

Topical minoxidil is a drug that can help some men with pattern hair loss.
