Key facts at a glance

TypeExfoliant
Use1–2× weekly

How it's thought to work

Dissolves the bonds holding dead skin cells together.

What the research says

Established for dandruff and psoriasis scale.

How it's used

Shampoos or scrubs once or twice a week.

What exfoliation can and cannot do

Salicylic acid helps loosen scale in certain scalp-care products. Removing flakes may make the scalp feel cleaner and help a topical reach the skin, but it does not establish that salicylic acid stimulates follicles or treats hereditary hair loss.

Avoid overdoing it

Read the exact shampoo or treatment label; salicylic acid appears at different concentrations and for different uses. Repeated exfoliation on a painful or broken scalp can worsen irritation. For ongoing flaking, seek a diagnosis rather than layering multiple acids and antifungals. FOLIGAIN® and other Minoxidil products have their own application directions and should be used on an appropriate scalp.
