An essential oil from an Australian tree.
Key facts at a glance
| Type | Essential oil |
| Evidence | Dandruff only |
How it's thought to work
Antimicrobial action against dandruff yeast.
What the research says
A 5% shampoo improved dandruff in a controlled trial.
How it's used
Ready-made shampoos.
What has actually been studied
A controlled trial studied a 5% tea-tree-oil shampoo for dandruff. That is evidence about one rinse-off preparation and flaking, not proof that undiluted essential oil grows hair or that every tea-tree shampoo performs the same way.
Irritation and safe handling
Tea tree oil can trigger allergic contact dermatitis. Choose a formulated product with directions rather than applying concentrated oil directly. Stop if itching or redness worsens and see a clinician for persistent symptoms. A dandruff shampoo and FOLIGAIN® or another OTC Minoxidil medicine address different concerns.
