Key facts at a glance

TypeMineral
Topical formZinc pyrithione

How it's thought to work

Supports cell growth; pyrithione controls yeast.

What the research says

Deficiency can cause shedding; extra zinc without deficiency hasn't proven helpful.

How it's used

Supplements only if needed; pyrithione shampoos 2–3× weekly.

Two uses often confused

Oral zinc is a nutrient; zinc pyrithione is a topical anti-dandruff ingredient. A shampoo for flakes does not replace correction of nutritional deficiency, and oral zinc does not automatically control dandruff. Check the product's exact Drug Facts panel and intended use.

Too much can backfire

Long-term excessive zinc intake can interfere with copper status and cause health problems. Hair shedding alone does not establish zinc deficiency, so ask a clinician about assessment before high-dose supplements. For hereditary thinning, FOLIGAIN® and other topical Minoxidil products have a separate drug indication; treating dandruff may improve comfort without proving regrowth.
