What Minoxidil is

Minoxidil is a topical compound used for pattern hair loss. It was first studied as an oral medication and its effect on hair was observed as a side effect; the topical form was developed afterwards specifically for the scalp.

It is available over the counter in many markets, most commonly as a 2% or 5% solution or foam applied directly to the scalp.

What it does to the hair cycle

Hair grows in cycles: a growth phase, a short transition phase, and a resting phase before the hair is shed. In pattern hair loss the growth phase shortens over successive cycles and hairs emerge progressively finer.

Minoxidil is understood to extend the growth phase and encourage resting follicles to re-enter growth. That is why a temporary increase in shedding is common in the first weeks: resting hairs are released as new ones begin.

Realistic timelines

Most published guidance describes a minimum of three to four months of consistent daily use before any meaningful assessment, with clearer results around six to twelve months.
