Which strength is for women?
In the U.S., women's Minoxidil comes as a 2% liquid used twice a day, or a 5% foam used once a day. The 5% liquid is labeled for men only. Always use the product labeled for you.
How to apply it along a part
Female pattern thinning usually shows as a widening part or less volume on top. To reach the scalp:
- Start with a dry scalp.
- Make a part where the thinning is most visible.
- Apply a little of the dose along the part.
- Make a new part about 1 cm to the side and repeat until the dose is used.
- Spread gently and wash your hands.
Styling and hair care
You can color, perm or relax your hair while using Minoxidil, but avoid applying it on the same day as a chemical treatment and stop if your scalp gets irritated. Once it dries, normal styling products are fine.
What to expect
Most women notice less shedding first, then finer new hairs, then more fullness. Allow at least four months, and often up to a year, for the full effect. Results last only while you keep using it.
When to see a doctor first
- Sudden or patchy hair loss
- Hair loss after childbirth, a new medicine or an illness
- Irregular periods, acne or extra facial hair, which can point to a hormone issue like PCOS
- A red, painful or scaly scalp

Can I use it after menopause?
Yes, it's often used for thinning after menopause. Check with your clinician if you take other medicines.
