FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The questions readers ask most often, answered without overpromising.
General
How long before I can tell whether a hair-growth routine is working?
Give any routine a minimum of three to four months of consistent daily use, and ideally six to twelve months, before judging it. Take monthly photographs in consistent lighting.
Is shedding at the start normal?
A temporary increase in shedding within the first two to eight weeks is commonly reported when starting Minoxidil. Shedding that worsens beyond a couple of months, or comes with pain or patchy loss, should be assessed by a clinician.
Foam or solution — which should I choose?
Both deliver the same active. Foam dries faster and usually omits propylene glycol; solution allows precise placement. Choose the one you will realistically use every day.
Do I need to keep using the product?
Benefits from Minoxidil depend on continued use. If you stop, hair is expected to return over time to the state it would have reached without treatment.
Can women use the same products as men?
Products and strengths are directed to specific audiences. Follow the directions for the product sold for your market and audience, and speak to a clinician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a medical condition.
Is this website independent from FOLIGAIN®?
No. The FOLIGAIN® Hair Intelligence™ is owned and published by FOLIGAIN®. It is an educational resource, and it also introduces FOLIGAIN® products where they are relevant.
Hair loss basics
How many hairs a day is normal to lose?
Most people shed about 50–100 hairs a day. Wash days can look like more because hairs collect between washes.
What's the most common cause of hair loss?
Hereditary pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in both men and women.
Is hair loss inherited from my mother's side?
It can come from either parent. Many genes are involved, not just one on the mother's side.
Can stress really make my hair fall out?
Yes. A major stressor can trigger telogen effluvium, heavy shedding that usually starts 2–3 months later and settles within about six months.
At what age does hair loss start?
Pattern hair loss can begin as early as the late teens; many people notice changes in their 20s–40s.
Is hair loss reversible?
It depends on the cause. Shedding from stress, illness or low iron often recovers; pattern loss can be slowed and partly reversed with treatment; scarring loss is permanent.
What's the difference between shedding and breakage?
Shed hairs come out from the root, often with a small white bulb. Broken hairs snap along the shaft and have no bulb.
Can hats cause baldness?
No. Normal hats don't cause hair loss, though very tight headwear worn constantly can pull on hair.
Does washing my hair often cause hair loss?
No. Washing only removes hairs that were already about to shed.
Can diet cause hair loss?
Crash diets, very low protein and low iron, zinc or vitamin D can all contribute to shedding.
Minoxidil
How long does minoxidil take to work?
Usually 3–6 months to see visible changes, and up to 12 months for full results.
Why am I shedding more after starting minoxidil?
Early shedding is common in the first 2–8 weeks as follicles restart their cycle. It usually settles.
Can I use minoxidil once a day?
The label for men's 5% liquid is twice daily; women's products are once daily. Follow your product label.
Does minoxidil work on the hairline?
It's approved for the top of the scalp. Some people see hairline improvement, but results there are less predictable.
Can women use 5% minoxidil?
In the US, women's 5% foam is approved for once-daily use. 5% liquid is labeled for men.
Is foam or liquid better?
They work similarly. Foam is free of propylene glycol and may suit sensitive scalps; liquid can reach the scalp more easily through hair.
Can I wash my hair after applying minoxidil?
Wait until it's fully absorbed — about four hours is commonly advised.
What if I miss a dose?
Just carry on with the next one. Don't double up.
Is minoxidil safe during pregnancy?
It isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor.
Will minoxidil make hair grow on my face?
Unwanted facial hair can occur if product drips or transfers. Wash hands and let it dry before bed.
Treatments & prescriptions
What does finasteride do?
It's a prescription tablet for men that lowers DHT, slowing hair loss and often regrowing some hair.
Can women take finasteride?
It's not approved for women and must be avoided in pregnancy. Some doctors prescribe it off-label after menopause.
What is oral minoxidil?
Low-dose minoxidil tablets that doctors sometimes prescribe off-label. It needs medical supervision.
Do hair transplants last?
Transplanted hair usually lasts long term, but untransplanted hair can keep thinning, so many people continue treatment.
How much does a hair transplant cost?
In the US, often several thousand to over $15,000 depending on graft numbers and clinic.
Does PRP work?
Some studies show modest benefit, but protocols vary and it's not FDA-approved specifically for hair loss.
Do laser caps work?
Some are FDA-cleared and small studies show benefit; they need consistent use over months.
What are JAK inhibitors?
Oral drugs such as baricitinib and ritlecitinib, approved for severe alopecia areata.
Is spironolactone for hair loss?
Doctors sometimes prescribe it off-label for female pattern hair loss or PCOS-related thinning.
Can I combine treatments?
Many people combine minoxidil with other approaches. Ask a doctor before combining prescription drugs.
Women's hair
Why is my part getting wider?
A widening part is a classic sign of female pattern hair loss. A dermatologist can confirm it.
Is postpartum hair loss permanent?
No. It usually peaks 3–4 months after birth and recovers within a year.
Can menopause cause thinning?
Yes. Falling estrogen can make hair thinner and slower growing.
Does PCOS affect scalp hair?
It can cause thinning on the scalp and extra hair elsewhere due to higher androgens.
Can birth control affect hair?
Starting or stopping some pills can trigger shedding in sensitive people.
Are tight hairstyles bad for my hair?
Constant tension from tight braids, ponytails or extensions can cause traction alopecia.
Men's hair
Is a receding hairline always balding?
Not always. Many men develop a slightly higher mature hairline without progressing further.
What is the Norwood scale?
A 7-stage chart used to describe male pattern hair loss.
Can I stop hair loss in my 20s?
Early treatment gives the best chance of keeping hair. Minoxidil and doctor-prescribed options can help.
Does creatine cause hair loss?
One small study showed a rise in DHT; there's no strong evidence it causes hair loss.
Does masturbation cause hair loss?
No. There's no evidence linking it to hair loss.
Scalp health
What's the difference between dandruff and dry scalp?
Dandruff flakes are often larger and oily; dry scalp flakes are small, white and dry.
How often should I wash my hair?
Whatever keeps your scalp comfortable — from daily for oily scalps to once a week for some curly hair.
Can an itchy scalp cause hair loss?
Itch itself doesn't, but conditions behind it and heavy scratching can affect hair.
Are sulfate-free shampoos better?
They're gentler for dry or sensitive scalps, but sulfates aren't harmful for most people.
What helps an oily scalp?
Regular washing with a clarifying shampoo and avoiding heavy oils on the scalp.
Ingredients & supplements
Does biotin help hair growth?
Only if you're deficient, which is uncommon.
Is rosemary oil proven?
One small study was encouraging; more research is needed.
Do hair gummies work?
They help only if you lack a nutrient they contain.
Is caffeine shampoo worth it?
It's gentle and cheap, but evidence is early. Leave it on a few minutes.
What is TRIOXIDIL®?
A FOLIGAIN® cosmetic ingredient complex. See our TRIOXIDIL® guides for details.
FOLIGAIN® products
What's in FOLIGAIN® Minoxidil 5% for men?
The active ingredient is Minoxidil 5% w/v, an over-the-counter topical drug. The other ingredients are alcohol, propylene glycol and purified water.
How do I use FOLIGAIN® Minoxidil?
Apply 1 mL to the affected area of the scalp twice daily, exactly as the label directs. Using more, or using it more often, does not improve results.
What side effects can Minoxidil cause?
The most common are scalp irritation, itching or dryness where it's applied. Unwanted facial hair growth and a rapid heartbeat are less common. Stop and see a doctor if you get chest pain, dizziness, sudden weight gain or swelling. Read the full Drug Facts label before use.
Who should not use Minoxidil?
Don't use it if your scalp is red, inflamed, infected or painful, if your hair loss is sudden or patchy, or if you're under 18. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use it. Ask a doctor first if you have heart disease.
What is TRIOXIDIL® in FOLIGAIN® products?
TRIOXIDIL® is FOLIGAIN®'s own cosmetic ingredient complex, used in its shampoos, conditioners and serums. It's a cosmetic, not a drug, and isn't a replacement for Minoxidil treatment.
Does FOLIGAIN® make products for women?
Yes. FOLIGAIN® offers Minoxidil products labeled for women as well as TRIOXIDIL® hair care. Always use the product labeled for you.
Where can I buy FOLIGAIN® products?
From the official store at foligain.com. Our product pages link straight to the current listings, where you can see today's price and availability.
Are FOLIGAIN® supplements a treatment for hair loss?
No. Supplements support general nutrition and only help hair when a nutrient gap exists. They are not drugs and don't treat hereditary hair loss.
