Why it happens

When resting follicles are prompted back into a growth phase, the old hair still sitting in the follicle is pushed out. The visible result is more hair in the shower or on the pillow, usually starting two to eight weeks into a new routine.

How long it lasts

For most people this settles within a few weeks. Shedding that keeps intensifying past a couple of months, or that comes with scalp pain, redness or sudden patchy loss, is worth discussing with a dermatologist rather than waiting out.

What not to do

Stopping and restarting repeatedly is the most common reason people never find out whether a product would have worked for them. Decide on a trial period in advance and keep photographs.
