Building a Scalp Routine You Will Actually Keep
Cleansing frequency, build-up, flaking and irritation — how to keep the scalp comfortable while running a topical routine.

Start with cleansing
Build-up from styling products and topicals can leave the scalp itchy and flaky. For most people washing every one to two days with a gentle shampoo is enough; leaving longer gaps is not automatically gentler.
Keep the routine small
Two or three steps used consistently will beat six steps used sporadically. Add products one at a time so you can tell what is causing a reaction if one occurs.
- Cleanse with a gentle shampoo
- Condition mid-lengths and ends
- Apply your topical to a dry scalp
- Leave it undisturbed before styling
When to pause
Persistent burning, spreading redness, swelling or open skin are reasons to stop and seek advice rather than push through.

Individual results vary. Hair-growth products are used consistently over months, and outcomes depend on the cause and stage of hair loss.
