Hair Growth

How hair grows, what influences it and which evidence-based approaches support fuller, healthier-looking hair.

Hair growth follows a slow cycle of growth, transition and rest. Understanding it explains shedding, timelines and why routines take months.

Hair Growth FAQ

How long does telogen effluvium last?

Acute telogen effluvium usually settles within about six months of the trigger resolving, with density recovering gradually over the following months.

Does telogen effluvium cause baldness?

It causes diffuse thinning, not bald patches, and the follicles remain alive. It does not by itself cause permanent baldness.

Should I stop washing my hair?

No. Washing only removes hairs that were already shed. Gentle, regular washing keeps the scalp comfortable.

Can stress alone cause telogen effluvium?

Severe emotional stress is a recognised trigger, though physical triggers such as illness, childbirth and diet changes are more commonly identified.

How fast does hair grow?

Scalp hair grows roughly 1 cm, or about half an inch, per month during the anagen phase, with individual variation.

Why does my hair stop growing at a certain length?

Maximum length depends on how long your anagen phase lasts. A shorter anagen phase means hair is shed before it grows very long.

Is it normal to shed hair every day?

Yes. Shedding is part of the normal cycle as old hairs are replaced by new ones.

Is losing 150 hairs a day normal?

It can be on a wash day, especially with long hair. Persistently high shedding over several weeks is worth discussing with a clinician.
