Ingredients
Conditions
Iron deficiency hair loss
Low iron stores (ferritin) are linked with increased shedding, especially in women with heavy periods or plant-based diets.
Telogen effluvium
A sudden increase in shedding that happens when a stressor pushes many hairs into the resting (telogen) phase at once. Shedding typically starts 2–3 months after the trigger.
Postpartum hair loss
A common, temporary telogen effluvium that begins 2–4 months after giving birth as hormone levels fall back to normal.
Menopause hair thinning
Falling estrogen can unmask female pattern hair loss and make hair drier and finer during perimenopause and after.
Androgenetic alopecia
The most common cause of hair loss worldwide. Genetics and sensitivity to hormones called androgens (mainly DHT) make follicles gradually shrink, so hairs grow finer and shorter over years.
Thyroid-related hair loss
Both underactive and overactive thyroid can cause diffuse thinning. Hair typically improves once thyroid levels are treated.
Glossary
Iron deficiency
Low body iron stores, a common and treatable cause of shedding.
Spironolactone
A prescription anti-androgen used off-label for female hair loss.
Ferritin
A blood marker of stored iron, often checked when investigating hair shedding.
Anemia
A low red blood cell count, often from low iron, which can contribute to shedding.
Anti-androgen
A medicine that blocks the effects of male hormones, such as spironolactone.
Blood panel
A set of blood tests; for hair loss it often includes iron, thyroid and vitamin D.
Nutritional deficiency
Lacking a nutrient such as iron, zinc or vitamin D.
FAQs
Is spironolactone for hair loss?
Doctors sometimes prescribe it off-label for female pattern hair loss or PCOS-related thinning.
Is hair loss reversible?
It depends on the cause. Shedding from stress, illness or low iron often recovers; pattern loss can be slowed and partly reversed with treatment; scarring loss is permanent.
Can diet cause hair loss?
Crash diets, very low protein and low iron, zinc or vitamin D can all contribute to shedding.
